About the Book

In At The Geek End is the madcap story of Englishman, James Smith, who inadvertently stumbles into a career as a computer programmer in the hush-hush top secret defence industry. He's not cut out for the job and has to reconcile working with an impossible bunch of characters including alcoholics, power builders and nerds, to drop-outs, hippies and conformists - all working on multi-million pound defence projects that are often late and over budget. Taking to the road as a freelance contractor does not alleviate the headaches. The intense cocktail of stress and boredom manifests itself in a series of practical jokes that go terribly wrong, whilst wayward romances and an eye-popping extreme sports regime eat into his erratic earnings. Living in bed and breakfast accommodation for eight years, he dreams to break away - find a new career. But financial pressures, and a doomed romance with a croupier working on a luxury ocean liner, leads James into a downward spiral - a high tech gypsy on a pathway to destruction. Whilst his colleagues face nervous breakdowns, personal crises, and even death, James fights to escape the madness. This is a must-read for anyone chained to a desk or dreaming of changing careers. With echoes of The Graduate, The Moon's a Balloon, or even Ricky Gervais' The Office, In At The Geek End is edgy, sometimes bittersweet, and certainly outrageous. So, boot-up your operating system and prepare for geek hell! "A brilliantly observed story of office politics, love, lust, hope and tragedy." (M McDougal, UK) "Unmissable!" (C Crane, UK)

About the Author :
Born in Surrey, England, James Smith was brought up in the USA and South Africa before his globetrotting family returned to Essex in the late 1970s. Following college stints at Chelmsford and Leicester, he embarked on a career in the computer business. This, however, was short-lived as he spent much of his time and energy surfing, writing, recording music, and filmmaking. He now directs independent feature films and develops writing ideas, many of which are based on experiences from frequent visits to Andalucia."
