About the Book

This volume is the sixth in a series of reference works that takes the analysis of worldwide Christianity to a deeper level of detail. It focuses on Christianity in Latin America and the Caribbean, covering every country and offering both reliable demographic information and original interpretative essays by indigenous scholars and practitioners. It maps patterns of growth and decline, assesses major traditions and movements, analyses key themes, and examines current trends. As a comprehensive account of the presence of Christianity in every country in Latin America, this volume will become a standard work of reference in its field.

Review :
The seismic demographic shift of Christianity to the global south is merely the tip of the iceberg for assessing contemporary developments in Latin America and the Caribbean. This volume enriches understanding of how Christianity is evolving in those regions and why that evolution matters.--Professor Timothy Matovina, University of Notre Dame The sixth of an envisioned ten volume series, this encyclopedia on Christianity in Latin America and the Caribbean makes an impressive contribution to the comparative study of the influence of diverse Christian traditions in the region. The editors have brought together a combination of engaged and inter-disciplinary scholars whose contributions are marked by a clarity of vision and purpose. In each of the three sections (countries, traditions and themes), the contributors demonstrate a noteworthy capacity for dealing not only with the complexities and intricacies of history, but also, and perhaps more importantly, with the contemporary realities and demographics shaping the role, scope and significance of Christianity within cultures and societies that are best understood when presented in distinct, differentiated and interconnected ways.--Margaret Eletta Guider, O.S.F., S.T.L., Th.D. Associate Professor of Missiology This beautiful volume, lavish in its printed edition, is a solid companion to walk into Latin American Christianity thanks to the quality of the contributions, the diversity of age, gender, and religious affiliation, and the huge effort to engage local scholars. The volume overcomes the uneven state of religious studies in Latin America both in terms of countries and disciplines.--Gustavo Morello, Boston College "Religious Studies Review, Vol. 48, No. 4"
