About the Book

This text presents a series of thematic chapters together with chapters on representative groundwater systems in Europe which illustrate the main processes and evolution of water quality. * Brings together the research of a consortium of leading European scientists who have conducted detailed studies of water quality in Europe * Includes a synthesis of findings, highlighting the thematic and regional results, with recommendations regarding aquifer evaluation, indicators, monitoring, and drinking water standards * Creates a key reference work on natural water quality of aquifers, at a time when the Groundwater Directive (GD) will shortly be brought in to supplement The European Water Framework Directive (WFD) to ensure good status of groundwater

About the Author :
Mike Edmunds, based at Oxford University, is Research Director of the Oxford Centre for Water Research and formerly research geochemist with the British Geological Survey. He has worked extensively on groundwater quality in UK and overseas and has over 200 scientific publications. Paul Shand is a Landscape Geochemist with CSIRO in Adelaide, Australia and Program Leader for research into environmental applications of regolith science for the Australian Commonwealth Research Council for Landscape Environments and Mineral Exploration Program. He was formerly a Principal Hydrogeochemist with the British Geological Survey and has worked extensively in the UK and abroad on a wide range of hydrogeochemistry and water quality issues.

Review :
"This book is a well-written explanation of the natural groundwater quality of European aquifers. These studies will serve as a good reference for researchers, agencies, and professional organizations in carrying out the European Groundwater Directive and for researching other European aquifers that have not been well documented." (Carbonates Evaporites, 2010) "This is a well-produced book with many detailed, clear figures. It will serve its purpose well - of informing WFD assessments of natural background quality." (Geoscientist, 1 December 2010) "This text is the result of these important studies and constitutes a key reference on natural water quality of acquifiers." (Journal of the American Water Resources Association, December 2008) "The book would be a very good introduction for scientists desiring to learn more about this area of inquiry ... .The book also would be useful for someone interested in learning more about the major aquifiers of Europe." (Ground Water, November/December 2008)
