Abstract: Abstract Hong Kong Cantonese has, over time, established itself as a unique blend of Cantonese and English, making extensive use of Cantonese-English code switching in its lexicon, and fundamentally differing from Mandarin and other dialects of Chinese in its grammatical structure. Socio-psychological research into this linguistic phenomenon shows that many factors are responsible for the coinage of "Hong Kong" words, phrases, and structure: its historical separation from Guangzhou and the rest of Mainland China (and association with Britain), its educational system, which requires Hong Kong youth to use English from an early age, creating in youth a tendency to code switch, as well as a feeling in Hong Kong that English is a higher-class language, having formerly been the language of its government. Such influence on Cantonese words may be analyzed according to their linguistic function; examples of Content Words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, determiners, quantifiers, pronouns, and adverbs) and Function Words (prepositions, conjunctions, interjections, onomatopoeic phrases, auxiliaries, and modal particles) are analyzed with relation to Cantonese-English code switching, and also from a perspective comparing current Hong Kong Cantonese with Traditional Cantonese. Essentially, Hong Kong Cantonese, and increasingly, Mandarin Chinese, are becoming influenced by English. Socio-psychological - 2 - factors, such as the need for internationalization and the desire to be able to communicate with others has caused the erosion of "Traditional" Chinese words, from Cantonese in particular, and instead has given rise to a new breed of Hong Kong Cantonese, which is neither completely Chinese nor completely English -- just as the people of modern Hong Kong are, in speech and in thought. - 3 - DOI: 10.5353/th_b3618075 Subjects: Cantonese dialects - China - Hong Kong - New words Cantonese dialects - Social aspects Cantonese dialects - Psychological aspects
