Excerpt from L'Odyssée d'Homère: Texte Grec, Revu Et Corrigé d'Après les Diorthoses Alexandrines Accompagné d'un Commentaire Critique Et Explicatif Précédé d'une Introduction Et Suivi de la Batrachomyomachie, des Hymnes Homériques, Etc.; Chants I-XII Les Athéniens savaient par coeur dès l'enfance les deux épo pées d'homère. C'est là ce qui explique pourquoi, dans les exemplaires à leur usage, en se dispensait de mettre les titres particuliers des rhapsodies. Au premier vers qui suivait une coronis, ils se sentaient en pays connu, et ils nommaient la rhapsodie par sa désignation accoutumée. Quand la division de chaque poème en vingt - quatre chants eut prévalu, c'est-à-dire au temps d'aristarque, on distingua les 'chants par les lettres de l'alphabet, depuis alpha jusqu'à oméga. Ces chants avaient toujours le titre de rhapsodies, mais les rhapsodies alphabé tiques nè correspondent pas rigoureusement à celles des rhap sodes. Il y a quelquefois jusqu'à deux et trois rhapsodies an ciennes dans un seul chant; d'autres fois, au contraire, une seule rhapsodie ancienne déborde sur deux ou plusieurs chants. Ainsi, dans l'iliade, les Exploits de Diomède occupent le chant cinquième tout entier et une partie du chant sixième; ainsi, dans l'odyssée, le Récit d' Ulysse à A!cinoüs embrasse quatre chants (ix - XII), et l'on regardait ce récit comme une rhapsodie unique, sauf à y tailler au besoin cinq ou six sujets de récita tion la Cyclopée, Éole, les Leshyg0ns, Circe', l'évocation des morts, etc. Cependant les titres anciens joints à chaque lettre numérale sont en général à leur place.
