About the Book

Cheilanthoid ferns thrive in arid regions worldwide and typically occupy exposed, rocky habitats. Morphological convergence associated with adaptation to xeric environments is credited with obscuring cheilanthoid lineages. My initial goal was to investigate the monophyly of Pellaea by generating phylogenies from a broad sampling of cheilanthoid ferns and to identify pellaeoid synapomorphies. My second goal was to clarify classification in this group. My final goal was to quantify desiccation-tolerance (D-T) among cheilanthoids and evaluate this physiology from a phylogenetic perspective. DNA sequences of the chloroplast rps4 gene and rps4-trnS and trnL-F intergenic spacers were generated from 153 cheilanthoid samples. Character-states for 59 non-molecular characters were determined for all pellaeoid and Argyrochosma exemplars (99/153). Well-supported pellaeoid, Argyrochosma, American Cheilanthes, and "distant cheilanthoid" clades were recovered from parsimony or likelihood analyses of separate and combined molecular and non-molecular datasets. Results show that Pellaea sensu Tryon and Tryon is polyphyletic; Pellaea sections Holcochlaena and Ormopteris are distant relatives of sections Pellaea and Platyloma and have closer affinities within the distant cheilanthoids. A core pellaeoid clade can be recognized, comprised of four subclades: Pellaea s.s, Platyloma s.l., Astrolepis s.l., and Paragymnopteris s.l. A revised classification reflecting these phylogenetic relationships is presented. The distribution of base chromosome numbers across the cheilanthoid phylogeny reveals synapomorphies of x = 29 for the pellaeoid clade and x = 27 for Argyrochosma, and suggests an evolutionary trend toward reduction in base number. Current geographic distribution of cheilanthoid ferns suggests multiple introductions into the Old World from several ancestral New World lineages. Measurements of metabolic activity and water-use-efficiency during dehydration and rehydration of 45 cheilanthoid samples showed that different species had different levels of D-T. Results suggest that D-T is ancestral in cheilanthoid ferns and has decreased in lineages whose habitats are wetter, cooler, and/or subject to shorter drought periods. Results show a negative correlation between levels of D-T and base-line photosynthesis, suggesting an adaptive trade-off between these two metabolically demanding physiologies.
