If He had only been there this would not have happened! But what strange words of comfort were these He had spoken to Martha? (ver. 23--27.) (3) Imagine Jesus amidst these sorrowing people--Martha, Mary, the Jews. His eyes filled with tears too--is troubled Himself (ver. 33,35, 38). No doubt His heart aches to see others so grieving (Heb. iv. 15). But another reason for His sorrow. Illust.--A beautiful machine--all put 'wrong--broken--spoiled--something has got in among the ivheels. So God's work marred by sin. Once "very good" (Gen. i. 31). This sorrow, grief, death, all sin's work. Jesus might well grieve over it. 2. A Scene of foy. Picture the scene at the cave. SNote 4. Listen to the sneering ews (ver. 37). How little they thought what was going to happen! Not even the sisters expected to see Lazarus again--thought perhaps it might have been if Jesus had come soon after death, as He did when the widow's son died, but now impossible--Lazarus had been dead four days. Note 3. Decay must have set in. But see--the stone is rolled away--Jesus lifts His eyes to heaven (His power is from above, ver. 41, 42)--calls with a loud voice. See Lazarus bound in grave-clothes come forth. "Loose him "--" cut the bandages." Illust.--Theivrappingsofamummy. "Let him go." What a wondrous miracle! Yet see the effect on the Jews (ver. 47--53). What a happy re-union for this family! But how long was this re-union to last? Till Lazarus or his sisters died! Lazarus only brought back to the world for a little while.
