In recent years we have had three variations in Britain, and the present one is considered by many good judges very unsatisfactory. Then we move to France, or the Mediterranean, and we find other systems of yacht measurement. We pass across to America, and we have three or four more. No doubt it is of considerable importance to the yachting world that gentlemen should approach the question in a scientific manner, and endeavour to find for us some simple rule--because it must be a simple rule, if it is going to work with any acceptability--by which those matters could be dealt with. I am certain we all feel very much obliged to Mr. Vogt for the care he has devoted to the subject, and I hope, when the yachting authorities have an opportunity of reading his paper, they will be convinced that he has given some solution of this difficult question, ibeg to move a hearty vote of thanks for his paper. In my first paper on balancing of steam engines I have shown the possibility of balancing a four-crank engine in such a manner--a connecting-rod of iDfinite length being presumed--as to completely neutralise the vertical forces as well as the couples produced in the plane of piston-rods. As it is, however, well known, a disturbance is caused in the balance by the connecting-rod, and the object of my further investigations has, therefore, been to ascertain up to what extent this disturbance can be avoided.
