It fell not with a steady motion, but appeared to meet with resistance on approaching the horizon, when its motion was diminished, and it moved by fits and starts. These observations are embodied in the 111 volume of "Reise der bsterreichischenFregatteNovaraum die Erde in den Jahren 1857, 58, nnd 59, unter dem Befehle des Commodore B. von Wttllerstorf-Urbair Nautisch-Physikalischer Theil, meteorologisches Tagebuch, Wien, 1865." I am indebted for a copy of this work to the kindness of Baron v. Wttllerstorf. p denotes the latitude, -f when North, --when South; X the longitude from Greenwich. The colour was in the beginning light blue, subsequently red, and in the centre yellow. No report. (p =--31-2, X = 9" 28- E)." After the 4th of February the number of meteors diminishes towards the end of the month, but on board the Novara, en route from Auckland to Papiete (Tahiti), a few days after the 4th of February in 1859, the 6th, in (p =--22, X--10 W), and the 7th of the same month, in (p=--21, X = 1011 W), a great number of meteors were observed; moreover very bright shooting stars were seen in 1859, on the 11th of February, when at anchor in Papiete (P =--n4(y, X--& bSTM W), as well as in 1858, on the 12th, 13, 14th, and 16th (p =-f-13, X = 5h 32TM E) when en route from Madras to the Nicobares Islands. Mr. Becker of the Victorian Exploring Expedition reports: "Torowoto, twenty miles beyond it towards Cooper's creek (p =--29-7, X = 9" 31m E), on the 16th of February, at 7h 34," a meteor was seen in theNE, six degrees towards the East of Jupiter; brilliant green, fell in a curved line, the convexity towards N.
