And if suffering, or resentments and provocations, discompose the spirit, things appear very commonly under some ill sorm, or they start up at some unseasonable time, or our suspicions are raised in an improper place and against some object that does not deserve them, So also, if the mind be enfeebled through fear and distrust, and the loft of hope, nothing will appear with advantage; insomuch that there will be little heart to attend to things at all, or to make any judgment about them. Theresore patience is necessary in its full extent, as to labours, tryals, and hopes, if we would form just anil proper notions of things, and receive true intelligence from them. This only will keep our souls in a capacity tp judge what is right and important, and how far we ought to be affected with every occurrence, and to concern ourselves with the tranfactions of others. Again: Patience is necessary to govern and direct the will. Men think it has a mighty air oi freedom, and of self enjoyment, to boast that " their wills are their "own, none is Lord over them: " But in reality there is nothing more destructive of the possession of their souls, than the unadvised impetuous motions of a strong Will. That man only who is patient in labours tryals and hopes, can preserve the will in such a tractable state, as to prevent frequent inconsistencies and conflicts, or painful misgivings and self reproaches. That resignation of ourselves to God which is included in Christian patience, will secure the quiet of our fouls in every choice and determination we come to; because in every thing we would take his counsel, and acquiesce in his pleasure.
