As I said before, all seem willing to do everything in their power to prevent disease and help to carry out the measures of the board of health. Sanitary laws cannot succeed without the co-operation of the citizens. However, there are some phases which need especial attention. For example, the proprietor of a restaurant persists in throwing out slops, milky water, etc., into the alleys; and indeed he Is placed in rather a hard position; and we find that it is utterly impossible to shut a man up and furnish him with no means for taking away this refuse matter. The wells become tainted with water from the cesspools and the ground soaked full of this waste, which shows that there is considerable unsanitary work going on in the ground. Thus far very little typhoid fever has been heard of, but our fevers are merging more and more toward typhoid, which must inevitably come unless measures are taken to prevent it. It is that which we can see above ground that our people are ready to help destroy. This volcano of disease which has been stored away in the ground is what needs their most careful attention. Dr. Crawford: There is nothing on the face of the earth so pernicious and destructive of health as vaults, privy-vaults.
