About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1880. Excerpt: ... SELF EXAMINATION. Lent.) Lent is the season appointed by the Church for fasting, prayer, and humiliation for our sins. It is a time when we should try, as far as possible, to withdraw ourselves from worldly pleasures and thoughts, and go apart with Jesus. A time when we should think over the past and discover what there is in our lives which needs amendment. "For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged," says S. Paul. It is clear, however, that before we can feel sorry, or before we can tell our sins to God, we must know what it is that we have done. In order to find out what our sins have been we must examine, or look into our lives. When you were at school and were learning arithmetic, if your sum would not prove you had to go over it again to find out where the mistake was. When you had found out the wrong figure you had to rub it out and put the right one in its place. So it is with our sins. They are the wrong figures which must be tound out and corrected. God has promised to torgive us our sins for Jesus Christ's sake. Nothing that we could do would take away our s...
