Minder dan in andere rollen wordt in deze gemist wat Mevr. de Vries ontbreekt: het sympathetisch orgaan, dat van roering blijk geeft en daardoor den toeschouwer roert, en de heerschappij over de stem de gematigdheid in spel, die altijd binnen de perken der fijne vormen en der bescheidenheid doet blijven. De armoede aan actrices, die de verschillende eigenschappen, voor haar emplooi vereenigen, werd gisteren avond weder bewezen door de keus van Mevr. Haspels-Valois als Prinses Gabrielle, eene rol zoo bevallig en naief, dat het ideaal bij lezing van het stuk gevormd niet verwezenlijkt werd. Behooren dergelijke ingenue-rollen niet eigenlijk tot het emplooi van Mevr. Egener-van Dam, die in de Schreiende en de lachende Weduwe zeer lief voor Laurence, dochter der blinde Mevrouw Rey, speelde? Er blijft in het gezelschap noch plaats over voor jonge tooneelspeelsters, en een bewijs, dat de Directie van die meening is, ligt in het debuut, een paar weken geleden, van Mej. Hoedt, die tot nu toe alleen in particuliere gezelschappen was opgetreden, maar z...
