Excerpt: ... APPENDIX. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH JOHN CECOLAMPADTTJS This eminent Reformer, the intimate friend and able coadjutor of Zuinglius, was born in 1482. According to Dupin, the place of his birth was at Auschein, in Switzerland; but other historians say it was at Weinsberg, in Franconia, which is more probable, as that place is only five miles distant from Heidelberg, where he went to school. His father was a merchant, and resolved that his son should follow the same profession; but his mother, a woman of great piety, was exceedingly desirous that he should receive a learned education. Through her solicitations, John was sent first 10 the college of Heilbrunn, and then to the university of Heidelberg, where he took the degree of bachelor of philosophy at the age of fourteen years. He was afterwards removed to Bologna, where he 126 studied civil law six months: but the air of Italy not agreeing with him, and this employment not suiting his inclination, he returned to Heidelberg, and applied himself to the study of divinity. Disregarding, however, the subtle but useless jargon of the schoolmen, he avoided their disputations, and devoted his whole attention to the acquirement of useful knowledge. He was no less watchful over his conversation and conduct, frequently remarking, "that he who increases in knowledge without virtue, does not increase, but decrease." His literary attainments soon procured for him the degree of master of arts, while his knowledge, benevolence, and piety, gained him the esteem and affection of the people in Heidelberg and the places adjacent. The reputation of his talents and learning having reached the ears of Philip, the Elector Palatine, that prince sent for him, and intrusted him with the education of his son.
