Function of the inter-oMce trunk.--Since the inter-office trunk is used between operators, each of whom is responsible for one of the two terminals of some connection, it is essential that certain signaling arrangements be provided. The A, or originating position, operator, for instance, must be advised when the party at the distant office has answered his call. She must also be advised when the called party, at the distant office, replaces his telephone receiver at the termination of the conversation. The operator at the incoming end of the trunk, known as the B operator, must be signalled to indicate when the operator in the distant office, where the call originated, has made the connection with the trunk after it has been assigned to her. The incoming trunk operator must also be signalled when the connection is removed at the originating position in the distant office and the trunk is released for later connections. It is obvious that these features may be accomplished by the proper circuit arrangements, provided the character of the switchboard circuits with which thev are to operate, are known. In Fig. 271 is shown the schematic arrangement of a trunk circuit which can be used, under ordinary manual operating conditions, with the three-wire multiple, three-wire repeating coil battery feed cord circuit sl own in Fig. 133. 944. Sequence of equipment operation.--Assuming that the A operator in an office equipped with the common battery circuit shown in Fig. 138, receives a call which is found to be for a telephone served by another office--after answering and receiving the subscriber's order, she will depress the order-wire button leading to the incoming operator's head telephone set in the distant office.
