About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1880 edition. Excerpt: ...used except by accident or with suicidal intent. SULPHURIO ACID / Is an oily liquid, with a strong affinity for water, and when mixed with it, a rise in temperature, with a consequent diminution of volume, is the result. This affinity for water is satisfied when the concentrated acid is brought into contact with wood, animal tissue, or any organic matter; the organic matter is thus broken down or charred. SYMPTOMS. If taken in the concentrated form, the symptoms come on immediately, and are: burning pains, extending from the mouth to the stomach. The pain is intense, often extending to the abdomen. In a few minutes, vomiting and violent retchiug; black or brownish-colored liquid, containing blood and disorganized shreds of mucous membrane, are thrown off. The mouth, throat and tongue are covered with a white coating, if the entire surface is not destroyed. The intensity of the pains may increase, with the patient unable to swallow---every attempt at swallowing bringing on a fresh attack of vomiting; the mouth filled with thick, bloody mucus. The respiration is embarrassed; the skin cold, and covered with perspiration; pulse frequent and threadlike. Unconsciousness ensues, passing gradually into coma and death. Death may be preceded by tetanic convulsions. PERIOD WHEN FATAL. Death may occur in from one to twenty-four hours, and may be delayed for days, or even weeks. Death may occur suddenly, from perforation of the stomach, or it may be delayed for weeks, and perforation result as a secondary cause, the result of ulceration. TREATMENT. Neutralize the poison with whatever alkali you are able to lay your hand on, if but one--such as sodic carbonate, chalk, soap, ashes, plaster from the ceiling; 7 if you can get nothing else.
