Dezember 1855 als altestes von funf Kindern der Eltern Wilhelm Mendelssohn, eines Vetters des Musikers Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, und Aimee Louise Mendelssohn, geborene Cauer, im schlesischen Ratibor zur Welt. Grossvater war der Padagoge Jacob Ludwig Cauer. Als Neunjahriger erhielt Arnold Mendelssohn den ersten Klavierunterricht und bewies grosses Talent. Auch in der Schule lernte er schnell. Durch eine vorzeitige Versetzung in die hohere Klasse wurde er zum jungsten Schuler der Sexta seines Gymnasiums. Eine unbeschwerte Kindheit blieb ihm jedoch nicht lange beschieden.
