E stato il 3 presidente degli Stati Uniti d'America ed e inoltre considerato uno dei padri fondatori della nazione. Il suo volto e ritratto sul Monte Rushmore accanto a quelli di George Washington, Abraham Lincoln e Theodore Roosevelt. Fu il principale autore della dichiarazione d'indipendenza del 4 luglio 1776 ed uno dei fondatori del Partito Democratico-Repubblicano degli Stati Uniti. Fortemente segnato dal pensiero illuminista scrisse un libro e fu un fautore di uno Stato laico e liberale. Fu inoltre anche un intellettuale di grande spessore.
