Hij was (samen met Ragnar Frisch) in 1969 de eerste die de prijs van de Zweedse Rijksbank voor economie (de "Nobelprijs" voor de Economie) kreeg uitgereikt. Hij wordt beschouwd als de grondlegger van de econometrie. Tinbergen was de zoon van Dirk Cornelis Tinbergen, leraar Nederlands, en Jeanette van Eek, onderwijzeres. In 1929 trouwde hij met Tine Johanna de Wit met wie hij vier kinderen kreeg. Voordat Tinbergen zich met economie bezig ging houden, ging hij in 1921 wis- en natuurkunde studeren aan de universiteit van Leiden.
