Il primo volo del prototipo francese risale al 2 marzo 1969, mentre il 4 novembre 1970 raggiunse per la prima volta Mach 2, diventando il secondo aereo commerciale a volare a tale velocita. Il Concorde entro ufficialmente in servizio il 21 gennaio 1976 sulle linee Parigi-Dakar-Rio de Janeiro e Londra-Bahrain; a novembre dell'anno successivo iniziarono i voli verso New York. Il 20 aprile 1979 entro in servizio l'ultimo Concorde prodotto. A causa dell'unico, ma disastroso incidente avvenuto il 25 luglio 2000, delle conseguenze economiche globali derivate dagli attentati dell'11 settembre 2001 e da altri fattori, cesso il servizio il 24 ottobre 2003 ed effettuo l'ultimo volo il 26 novembre dello stesso anno.. Alla fine degli anni cinquanta, l'Inghilterra, la Francia, gli Stati Uniti d'America e l'Unione Sovietica stavano considerando l'idea di sviluppare il trasporto aereo supersonico. Il progetto inglese, della Bristol Aeroplane Company, era chiamato Bristol 233, mentre quello francese, della Sud Aviation portava il nome di SuperCaravelle; entrambi erano in gran parte finanziati dai rispettivi governi.
