Iacchus), is een figuur uit de Frygische, Thracische en Griekse mythologie. Het was een godheid die in verschillende opzichten de belangrijkste invloed op het leven, denken en werken van de Grieken heeft uitgeoefend. Zijn Romeinse equivalent was Bacchus. Dionysos was de zoon van Zeus en Semele, de dochter van de Thebaanse koning Kadmos. De liefde die Zeus voor Semele koesterde wekte in hoge mate de ijverzucht van Hera op. Zij kwam onder een valse gedaante (Beroe) tot Semele en overreedde haar om Zeus te vragen, dat deze als bewijs dat hij werkelijk de god van de hemel was, zich aan haar in al zijn heerlijkheid zou vertonen. Door een eed gebonden moest Zeus het dwaze verzoek inwilligen, maar toen hij in de volle vuurgloed van zijn bliksem tot de ongelukkige kwam, verbrandde zij met haar huis. Zeus redde echter het knaapje, dat zij in haar schoot droeg en dadelijk ontsprongen uit de zuilen van het paleis klimopranken, die met hun koele bladeren het kind beschermden. Zeus borg zijn zoon in zijn dij, tot de tijd van zijn geboorte zou gekomen zijn, en toen Dionysos voor de tweede maal ter wereld kwam, gaf hij hem ter verzorging en opvoeding over aan de nimfen van Nysa. Oorspronkelijk was dit Nysa een mythisch oord; later droegen verschillende streken in Griekenland die naam. Daar werd het kind onder de trouwe zorg van de nimfen opgevoed. Een andere overlevering noemt Ino, de zus van zijn moeder Semele, als zijn opvoedster, en laat hem eerst tot de nimfen komen, nadat ook zij voor de vervolgingen van Hera had moeten zwichten.
