Es conocido por su voz versatil, que le ha permitido cantar como baritono y tenor. Reconocido como el mas grande tenor de todos los tiempos por la critica especializada, ademas es director de orquesta, productor y compositor, y director general de la Opera Nacional de Washington en Washington, D.C. y en la Opera de Los Angeles (California). Placido Domingo nacio en la calle de Ibiza de Madrid, Espana, hijo de los cantantes de zarzuela Placido Domingo y Josefa Pepita Embil Echaniz. Es conocido en su familia como "El Granado," por cantar desde muy pequeno la cancion Granada de Agustin Lara. En 1949 su familia se traslado a la Ciudad de Mexico para trabajar en teatro musical y pronto destaco en las lecciones de piano, para luego estudiar en la Escuela Nacional de Artes y en el Conservatorio Nacional de Musica de la capital mexicana, estudiando piano y direccion de orquesta. Alli fue donde conocio y se caso en 1957 con la pianista Ana Maria Guerra Cue, con quien tuvo a su primogenito, Jose Placido Domingo Guerra, nacido el 16 de junio de 1958. El matrimonio no duro.
