Not illustrated. 1836 Excerpt: ...following words: --My Lords, I appear before you in this case. as Counsel on behalf of the Reverend David Watson, who claims to he Minister of the Congregation of Clough, and of the other defendants who form a part of the majority of the original members of that congregation; and who, as such, claim to be entitled under the trusts of the fee farm grant of l'/'36, to the possession, use, and enjoyment of the meeting-house mentioned in the pleadings. The case made by my clients is this: --They admit the establishment of the congregation of Clough, and its original formation at the time stated in the Bill; and they also. admit. upon belief, that the different n 0 26 ministers who have been stated to have ofliciated from time'to llmfir as the clergymen of that congregation previous to the year 1721, were the same persons as mentioned in the bill; and, that in the year 1722 Hugh Williamson was ordained the minister of that congregation. But, they state, from the several facts that have come within their knowledge--from all they have understood and believe, that the Reverend Hugh Williamson was not a subscriber to the Westminster confession of faith. They admit the grant made by Mr. Francis Annesley, in the year l736, to the Reverend Hugh Williamson, and the other persons named in the deed, of the ground upon which the present meeting-house stands, and that the trusts of that deed are declared by it to be " for the use, and behoof, and sole benefit of the Protestant Dissenting Congregation of Clough and Drumca, for the time being, and for all and every other succeeding Congregation of Protestant Dissenters or Presbyterians, who, from time to time, would meet and assemble there for the purpose of worshipping God for ever;" and, in reply to the charg...
