At the county poorhouse of Warren County, New Jersey, two of the charges eloped after six years' acquaintance. Each was more than sixty years old. They had worked out in the fields side by side, and trudged back at sundown, side by side, to the quiet gray buildings that formed their home. One morning, when the great bell rang to awaken the inmates, it was found that Frederick Sherry and Lizzie Decker were trussing. A rope ladder dangled from the second-story window, and told mutely of the elopement and escape. The couple were pursued and caught near the Delaware Water Gap. A month later they eloped again, this time in a buggy, with a heavy tailed streetcar, drawn by mules. One day the car was hailed by J. M. Kidwell, a wellknown resident of Louisville, and a grandfather. With him was Miss Lucy Wilson, and both were troubled and excited. "My children arc chasing us in a buggy," Kidwell told the driver. "And we're on our way to get married. Can't you wake up those mules and make them run?" The mules were wakened, and the little car rattled and bumped over the narrowtrack at a gallop.
