Der vielseitig begabte Kunstler ist besonders durch seine Werke aus der Jugendstil-Zeit bekannt geworden. Er gehort zur ersten Generation der Kunstlerkolonie Worpswede. Vogeler war auch Revolutionar, Pazifist und Utopist und befand sich sein Leben lang, ungeachtet eigener bitterer Erfahrungen, auf der Suche nach dem irdischen Paradies, in dem alle Menschen in Harmonie zusammenleben. Sein Lebensweg endete im sowjetischen Exil tragisch. Stehend: Otto Modersohn, Fritz Mackensen, Heinrich Vogeler; sitzend: Fritz Overbeck, Hermann Allmers, Carl Vinnen 1895Vogeler wuchs als zweites von sieben Kindern des Eisenwarengrohandlers Carl Eduard Vogeler und seiner Frau Marie Louise, geb. Forster, in gutburgerlichen Verhaltnissen in Bremen auf. Das erste und das dritte Kind starben fruh, so dass Heinrich als Altester das vaterliche Geschaft ubernehmen sollte. Die ungeliebte Schule schloss er mit der mittleren Reife ab und sollte mit der Lehre in einem Bremer Handelshaus beginnen.
