About the Book

Demos is a novel by the English author George Gissing. It was first published in 1886 and is set in London during the late 19th century. The story follows the life of Richard Mutimer, a young man from a working-class background who dreams of rising above his station in life. Richard is a talented artist, but his ambitions are thwarted by his lack of money and connections. As the novel progresses, Richard becomes involved in radical politics and falls in love with a woman named Emily Hood. Emily is also from a working-class background, but she is more pragmatic than Richard and is focused on improving her own situation rather than changing society as a whole. The novel explores themes of social class, politics, and the struggles of working-class people in Victorian England. It also delves into the complexities of relationships, particularly those between people from different social backgrounds.Overall, Demos is a thought-provoking and engaging novel that offers a glimpse into the lives of ordinary people during a time of great social upheaval.Richard saw reason to deeply regret that the youth had been put to clerking in the first instance, and not rather trained for some handicraft, clerkships being about the least hopeful of positions for a working-class lad of small parts and pronounced blackguard tendencies. He came to the conclusion that even now it was not too late to remedy this error. 'Arry must be taught what work meant, and, before he came into possession of his means, he must, if possible, be led to devote his poor washy brains to some pursuit quite compatible with the standing of a capitalist, to acquire knowledge of a kind which he could afterwards use for the benefit of his own pocket. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
