Li Gustave Flaubert et mile Zola, il a marqu la littrature franaise par ses six romans, dont Une Vie en 1883, Bel-Ami en 1885, Pierre et Jean en 1887-1888, mais surtout par ses nouvelles (plus de 300), parfois intitules contes, comme Boule de Suif en 1880, les Contes de la bcasse en 1883 ou le Horla en 1887. Ces uvres retiennent l'attention par leur force raliste, la prsence importante du fantastique et par le pessimisme qui s'en dgage le plus souvent mais aussi par la matrise stylistique. La carrire littraire de Guy de Maupassant se limite une dcennie - de 1880 1890 - avant qu'il ne sombre peu peu dans la folie et ne meure quarante-deux ans. Reconnu de son vivant, Guy de Maupassant conserve un renom de premier plan, renouvel encore par les nombreuses adaptations filmes de ses uvres. Les Maupassant taient une vieille famille venue de Lorraine qui s'tait installe en Seine-Maritime (Normandie) au milieu du sicle. Son pre, Gustave de Maupassant, avait pous en 1846 Laure le Poittevin, une demoiselle de la bonne bourgeoisie. Avec son frre Alfred, elle avait t l'amie de Gustave Flaubert, le fils d'un chirurgien de Rouen, qui devait exercer une certaine influence sur la vie de son fils.
