Februar 1733 in Warschau) war ein aus der albertinischen Linie des Furstengeschlechts der Wettiner stammender Kurfurst von Sachsen (als Friedrich August I.) sowie ab 1697 Konig von Polen und Grossfurst von Litauen (als August II.) in Personalunion. Er gilt als eine der schillerndsten Figuren hofischer Prachtentfaltung des ausgehenden 17. und beginnenden 18. Jahrhunderts und begrundete als Prototyp absolutistischer Selbstdarstellung durch seine rege Bautatigkeit und sehr ausgepragte Sammelleidenschaft im Wesentlichen den Ruf Dresdens als prunkvolle barocke Metropole, der bis heute nachwirkt. Unter ihm erlebte der Kurstaat eine enorme wirtschaftliche, infrastrukturelle und kulturelle Blute. Gleichzeitig verwickelte er seine Untertanen jedoch in den glucklosen Nordischen Krieg, in dessen Verlauf er zwar die polnische Krone endgultig fur sich gewinnen konnte, aber bald darauf durch seine Unfahigkeit zu inneren Reformen den Weg fur weitere Kriege und die Starkung des russischen Einflusses in Polen bereitete.
