So long as she had her daughter to idolise, it did not matter to Mrs. Tabor where she lived; indeed, she preferred to live amongst those who had not witnessed the change in her fortune. She had not fallen from any very lofty pinnacle of prosperity, but any fall is a fall, and when one has come down in the world it is not pleasant to have to look up to former equals', genuinely or hypo, critically, pitying eyes. Poverty and unpopularity combined had, on the other hand, made Northoe a very distasteful place to Nelly; it was not her mother's kind of worship that she wanted, and accordingly she very eagerly accepted an invitation to spend a few weeks among her mother's kinsfolk. She had been gone some three or four weeks, when her mother received a letter which made her start off for the shires in hot haste. For some months she was absent from Northoe, only returning to it from time to time, to start on a fresh journey. At last she came back, bringing with her poor Nelly, who was about to become a mother. She came to pack up her furniture, and remove to some place where no one would know that disgrace had come upon her child. But there was not time, and the rivals whom Nelly had distanced took a cruel delight in letting her mother see that they did not believe one word of the lame story of a marriage with which she strove to hide her daughter's shame. Nelly did not live long after the birth of her baby, and then almost all the Northoe women tried to be kinder to Mrs. Tabor than they had ever been before, but she rebuffed their kindness. She gave her child the best funeral she could afford in the village churchyard, and shut herself up with the babe, whom she nursed for his mot...
