' But if there were no obstacle in the way of determining who ought to be included in the defective classes, there would be an almost insurmountable obstacle in the relu: tance of friends to publish the infirmities of those dear to them, and the respect fell for this sentiment by enumerators, who hesitate to put disagreeable and, possibly, needless questions." The following tables show, by sex, the color and civil condition, and the nativity and parent-nativity of each of the defective classes as returned in 1884: VISIT. The number of persons who were sick or temporarily disnbled on the day of the enumerator's visit in June. 1884, is 19,064, --10,378 males and 8,086 females. The total number is 915 less than the number of deaths returned as having occurred during the year ending June 1, 1884. The statistics of the sick and disabled inhabitants are shown in Table XIII., page 467. In this table is shown by sex, and ago in periods of years, the number sick or disabled from each specified disease or disability. The number at each period of age who were sick or disabled is as follows: 45 to 50 years of age 1,321 50 to 55 years of age 1,341 55 to 00 years of age 1,140 00 to 05 years of age 1,224 05 to 70 years of ago 1,198 70 to 75 years of age.. 1,093 75 to 80 years of age 826 80 and over 835 Agcunkuown 12 40 to 45 years of age 1,470 WAGE-WORKERS UNEMPLOYED.
