Excerpt: ...is the training or culture of the various powers of the child rather than its instruction in the branches of learning; and il is the results of this culture rather than in the studies of the Kindergarten that the true connection between the Kindergarten and the first grade of the Primary School is found. The fundamental object of the Primary School is also to unfold and train the powers of the child. But in addition to this it is required to give formal instruction in certain branches of study. The child enters the first grade of the primary school not knowing how to read, or write, or spell, or perform numerical operations. These branches are not taught in the Kindergarten; but it is the special function of the primary school to teach them. By means of carefully graded lessons, the child is taught to recognize printed words, to write them with pen or pencil, and to-earn how to add, (subtract, multiply and divide numbers. Drawing and sight singing are also taught in the primary school; and there are also language lessons, object lessons, or nature study, and instruction in the elements of literature. The most conspicuous object of the Primary School is therefore the teaching of certain branches of study. The main object of the Kindergarten is the unfolding of the powers of the child, --physical, intellectual, moral, etc. The Kindergarten endeavors to train the perceptive powers of the child by giving it objects, --blocks, toys, flowers, etc., to observe and describe. It endeavors to cultivate the judgment of the child by leading it to compare objects in respect to size, weight, color, and other qualities. It trains the imagination by the use of fairy stories, classic tales, and simple poems suitable to children; and these memorized and repeated.
