Grace was also to be taken back to her confidence and affection, and the little children were to be her pets and playthings, as usual. In accordance with this resolve, she appeared at the breakfast table, dressed in a neat and very becoming morning dress, with her smooth braids twisted about her head, in her accustomed style, looking the handsome, distinguished girl that she really was. Her father was charmed with this change, and when she advanced towards him to offer him a morning kiss, as of old, his rapture was unbounded. "I knew she could never hold out long against me," was his complacent reflection. "She is such a dear, affectionate, amiable child." Constance was struck with her beauty, but she soon found that under all this apparent loveliness, lay a deep-seated and settled aversion to herself. The change of manner did not extend to her. A calm, frigid courtesy, that was almost sarcastic, was awarded her, in the presence of Mr. Ellerton, to be replaced by a studied avoidance, or absolute rudeness, in his absence.
