About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos, missing text or index. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. 1855. Not illustrated. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXXII. A LONG LIST OF EXILES--FATHER, SON, AND THE HOLY GHOSTLITHOGRAPHIC BLASPHEMY. January 14th, 1852. The following are the names--familiar to most American readers--of some of the sixty-six members of the National Assembly "indefinitely banished," by a recent Presidential decree, from the soil of France. The floater part of them are Socialists: -- Victor Hugo, Theodore Bac, Charles Lagrange, Dupont, Nadaud, Charras, Schcelcher, Pierre Lefranc, De Flotte, Jules Leroux, Madier Montjau. Mathieu (de la Drome), Raspail, Noel Parfait. The following are exiled temporarily, or at the "discretion of the President: "-- Duvergier de Hauranne, De Remusat, Creton, Jules de Lasteyrie, Gen. LamoricMre, Emile de Girardin, Gen. Changarnicr, Pascal Duprat, Baze, > Edgar Quinet, Leflo, late V**om, Anthony Thouret, Gen. Bedeau, Victor Chauflbur, Thiers, Versigny. Chambolle, In this list are all the African generals of distinction, except Cavaignac; the most prominent Orleanists; M. Chambolle, late editor of the legitimist newspaper L'Ordre; and M. Girardin, editor of the Presse: the five last are Republicans. The whole party just set at liberty from Ham are included in this list, with the exception of Charras, who is one of the sixty-six doomed to perpetual banishment. The only prominent members of the ultra-democratic pai-ty, whose names I do not find in either of the two lists, are Michel de Bourges and Jules Favre. Cavaignac and Lamartine are unscathed. They are probably not considered dangerous, the one having lately married a young wife, and the other slowly recovering from a long and painful illness. Alexander Dumas has voluntarily left for Brussels. The papers containing these two decrees were hawked about the streets with the cry--" The new coup d'etat of Loui...
