Excerpt: ... Shore; also a half-length of Sir Robert Walpole, by Dahl; and a good portrait of Dr. John Sumner, the late Provost. The Chapel, which forms the principal object of attraction on account of its magnitude, by common consent ranks among the finest edifices in the kingdom; and exhibits the perfection of the style in which it is built. The eastern end is the most ancient, and the purest part of the structure. The walls at the west end were the last completed of the main body. The perforated battlements to the porches and small chapels were not completely finished till after the year 1530. The extreme length of the Chapel is 316 feet; the breadth 84 feet; the height from the ground to the summit of the battlements 90 feet; to the top of the pinnacles more than 101 feet; and to the top of each of the four corner turrets 146 feet. The interior length is 291 feet; the breadth 45; and the height 78 feet. The architect of this splendid structure was named Cloos, the father of Nicholas Cloos, or Close, who was made a Fellow of the college by Henry VI. in 1443, and afterwards Bishop of Lichfield. The Chapel was begun by Henry VI., who caused The figures on the western door (which is greatly inferior in its character to the Chapel itself) are apparently intended to refer to those on the doors of Solomon's Temple, 1 Kings, vi. 33-35. the foundation-stone to be laid by the Marquis of Suffolk as his proxy, on the Eve of St. Michael's Day, September 1447; but it was not advanced to any great extent before his death; only a small portion of the north and south walls being built, and the eastern end carried up a few feet from the ground.
