One of them, Rooknaood-Dowlah, had died previous to the Commander-inChiefs arrival; and another, the Rajah of Toolseepore, expired on the way to the Alumbagh. The whole of Brigadier-General Hope Grant's division served us as an escort to Alumbagh, Sir Colin A A himself heading it, while Sir James Outram was left with his division at Dilkusha, to prevent any possible molestation from the enemy. On the 25th an event happened which detracted not a little from the joy we were then experiencing. The gallant, the noble, the undaunted Havelock died at Dilkusha, of dysentery, caused by over-exertion and fatigue. It appeared as if he had strained every nerve to accomplish one object, and, having seen its accomplishment, succumbed to the prostration which the exertion had entailed. Havelock expired at the very time when the people of England with one voice proclaimed him entitled to the highest ..
