About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1879 edition. Excerpt: ...Thread bacteria often form swarms, but never zooglea jelly mass, as I asserted in my essay in 1853. States of motion and rest alternate with them, according to the presence or absence of oxygen, or the reaction of the medium or other circumstances. Certain species seem to be without motion. It is difficult to separate the different varieties of thread bacteria. The differences which we do observe are mostly due to the strength of their threads, which vary from the finest hair, which cannot be measured up to the thickness of 1 micrometer, and also to the length of their threads, which depends on the number of members connected in a chain. They have more or less flaccidity, which is entirely missing in some forms and very evident in others, similarly to the flexile beggiatoa. They have either straight lines or a wave-like curve to their rigid threads. The wave-like threads often deceive in their rotations, simulating an undulating or snake-like motion, and thereby have caused Ehrenberg to call these germs vibrio, when this motion is really only an optical illusion. The real motion, which is observed only in long threads, is partly passive, partly spontaneous, but only like oscillarium threads, turning in irregular chains--turning the whole thread and stretching it, but never changing the unyielding waves. There are two genera. a.. STRAIGHT THREADS GENUS BACILLUS. Threads very thin with motion: Bacillus subtilis. Threads thicker and stiff: Bacillus ulna. To this also belong the bacteridia of splenic fever, called bacillus anthracis, which must be classed I with bacillus subtilis, according to its morphological construction, but must be classed as an independent variety, on account count of its pathogenic importance. b. THREADS CURVED IN WAVE FORM...
