Not illustrated. 1879 Excerpt: ...embracing it with extended and extending wings, though now (1878) it has converted the same into a very centre. Large tracts of land, as now seen overspread with cotton manufactories and other industrial establishments, together with the habitations sheltering thousands of human beings within its compass, were in 1766, and many years ensuing, grazing ground for cattle, otherwise of snow-white lambs which "Leaped o'er your path with animated pride, Or grazed in merry clusters by your side." Newport-street, Trinity-street, Crook-street, and Great Moor-street then were not existant even in name. But the meadows and pastures, or part thereof, out of which they have since been formed wefe farming area for Parson Folds, his boundary fences having in one direction, for a line, the lower end of Bradshawgate, beginning at Union Buildings, with the intermediate space, thence including E. Holden & Co.'s omnibus, cab, and horse premises, the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway premises, with those portions absorbed by Holy Trinity Church, schools, etcetera. Evidence as to Parson Folds' holding in respect of land enclosed within Union Buildings, with neighbouring land, is to be found in transfer deeds attaching to cottage property, wherein the Reverend James Folds (as per legal description) had leased unto him a field, called " Dixon, or Shaw's Croft," containing 4,958 square yards, from Sarah Lever and Margaret Hopwood, in 1786, at a yearly rental of 20 13s. Sd., of which he again sold, leased, or in other forms disposed of, a specified measurement to John Greenhalgh, weaver, in 1797, for building purposes, at a lump sum of 56 7s. 6d., subject to an annual rent of 8s.
