About the Book

A sad and lonely little tree, has no idea about the world, or about what or who he is, until a plump little worm pops up from the ground to take the tree into the magical world of a human primary school. Initially the little tree causes panic amongst the school children and the teachers who get frightened by the sight of a walking-talking tree. However, once they get to know his purpose of self-discovery, he is allowed to enrol at the school as a pupil where the little tree learns about friendship and the joys of learning. As the seasons change, so does the physical aspect of the little tree who finally learns not just the fact that he is an apple tree, but also the meaning of the changes he experiences as the year progresses. As the little tree reaches the point of being in full fruit, he is given the chance to offer all his apples to the school children who have gone hungry as a result of a poor harvest. For this act of kindness, in addition to getting praised during the end of term assembly, the children and the school staff organize a fantastic farewell party for him. Now that the little apple tree knows who he truly is, he happily returns to the field from which he first started his journey of self-discovery, no longer sad or lonely. His contact with humans continues thereafter as the children visit him particularly to celebrate the different seasons.

About the Author :
Esperanza Isaac was born in Bogota, Colombia, S. America. She moved to England after marrying Christopher Isaac, the illustrator of the Little Tree that Didn't Know. She worked for a number of years as a freelance journalist for a variety of newspapers and magazines in different countries. Later, after becoming interested in children's education, she took up a series of teaching posts, including that of a specialist teacher in the education of children who had English as a second language. After 18 years of teaching, Esperanza has now given up her teaching career to dedicate herself to writing adult and children's fiction. Her first children's title is "The Little Tree that Didn't Know". In this first book, Esperanza Isaac shows how it is possible to go much further into a children's book character. Here, she not only describes the physical aspect of the Little Tree and his adventures, but she delves into the inner feelings of the character to illustrate to her young readers an understanding of the self and the means to be happy with ourselves in the community.
