About the Book

"Galdrbok" ('spell-book') straddles the divide between the academic and the inspirational, to provide arguably the most comprehensive and practical 'system' of Northwest European 'Heathen Shamanism' thus far in print. Nine years in preparation and painstakingly constructed by two practicing Heathen shamans, "Galdrbok" explores the magic of Migration Age Northwest Europe, and outlines a complete self-study program of Heathen Runecraft. "Galdrbok" introduces the essential techniques of Scrying ('to descry'/'foresee'/crystal gaze), and Galdr (magical chants or sung spells), and other powerful techniques involving Runes (whispered secrets and magical letters) for inducing the 'altered states' necessary to enter and explore the nine magical worlds of 'Yggdrasill' - the Heathen World Tree. The book also includes an impressively thorough bibliography for sourcing essential reading on Heathenry, Paganisms, and related occult subjects.

Table of Contents:
Sample Contents; The Runes; Wordcraft How to Use This Book Roots to Ecstasy; Shamanic Travel on the Northern World Tree Why Runecraft? The Otherworld; Recovering the Magick from Childhood Cosmogony; Origins Cosmology; The Realms of Yggdrasil Trance; Entering the Otherworld Galdr; Deity Invocation Ritual; Guidelines for Practice Magick; Working It / Making it Work Yggdrasil; The Shaman's Being Ragnarok.

Review :
"This is a remarkably intelligent, thoughtful and well-informed practical guide to the magic and spirituality of the Old North, in a form accessible to the present. It helps to confirm the Northern Tradition as one of the most scholarly and sophisticated in modern Paganism" Prof Ronald Hutton, Author of The Pagan Religions of the Ancient British Isles and Triumph of the Moon "A comprehensively researched, clear, and deeply thoughtful guide to the esoteric spirituality of the Northern tradition. Written in a direct and engaging style, it is also refreshingly practical, grounding the theory in ritual. It restores ancient magic to contemporary individual and community life." Prof Brian Bates, Author of The Way of Wyrd, Wisdom of the Wyrd and The Real Middle Earth "Johnson and Wallis' engaging and challenging book is another significant step in the recovery of an indigenous European religious worldview and lifeway. Here, at last, is a European based 'shamanism' that (re-) introduces us to ways of celebrating the particular places where we live among a wonderfully diverse community of life. Without pretending to be more than one, ancestrally rooted, ever evolving tradition, this Heathen shamanism honours a remarkable range of ancient and contemporary teachers and exponents of ways of altering consciousness, communication and culture" Dr Graham Harvey, Author of Listening People, Speaking Earth: Contemporary Paganism and Animism"
