About the Book

Set in Sao Paolo and spanning 12 hours, from dusk until dawn, this fast-paced novel presents the whirlwind, one-time adventures of an odd mix of eccentric characters who find each other at a funeral parlor. Alternating between each character in turn, this witty and amusing story capitalises on a cinematic style to create a colourful and multilayered portrayal of Brazilian society.

She is the author of more than 20 novels, plays, and short story collections, including A Bag of Stories, Scent of Love, and Village of the Ghost Bells . David S. He is the author of books that include Flash & Crash Days: Brazilian Theater in the Post-Dictatorship Period and The Modern Brazilian Stage , and the translator of Happy Old Year and Village of the Ghost Bells . Review :
"A prizewinning Brazilian novel . . . It's just the sort of book you hope will become a movie." Kirkus Reviews" "Winner of the Brazilian Academy of Letters prize for best novel and the Pen Club of Brazil for best book in 1993, this work gives 'snapshot' style background stories of several people who end up in the same funeral parlor one night in Sao Paolo . . . The pace is fast, and van Steen shows how many current social problems in Brazil affect her characters' lives. For all Latin American collections." Library Journal"
