About the Book

The famous Yellow Book (previously know as Gardens of England and Wales Open for Charity) has a new look and a ?new? name for 2005. Known affectionately for so long as the Yellow Book, it has now adopted its familiar name as the title of the new edition. Detailing some 3,500 gardens (mostly private) that open to the public for the National Gardens Scheme (NGS), the Yellow Book 2005 has over 450 new gardens and lively features from gardening professionals, celebrities and writers such as Kim Wilde, Joe Swift, Caroline Donald, Sarah Raven and Monty Don. Also new for 2005 is a listing of over 60 gardens offering bed and breakfast, self-catering or hotel accommodation, making the Yellow Book an even more enjoyable travelling companion. Extra colour pages detail more about the NGS and its charitable aims and photographs of the rich variety of gardens open for 2005 will delight any enthusiast or first time visitor. Readers can discover county-by-county opening information, directions and locations of every garden listed with themes as diverse as Japanese, topiary, cottage, kitchen gardens and allotments. While weekends remain popular, weekdays and evening openings are offered too, with teas and plants often available. Since the NGS?s foundation in 1927, more than #20 million has been raised for nursing, gardening and caring charities with some #1.8 million being donated in 2004 from garden openings in the previous year.

Review :
Joe Swift, Garden designer and TV presenter: "I?m lucky enough to have one of the best jobs in the world. Over the last 18 months I?ve visited a total of 35 yellow book gardens whilst filming two series of Garden Makers, and sure it was very tiring work driving for miles, and filming long days, but I can honestly say that as a garden designer myself, I have never been so stimulated, inspired and energised as during the time I spent on these visits. My own tour has proved that we truly are a nation of great gardeners, and the diversity and range never ceases to amaze me. Whether you want to visit a cottage garden or an urban ?outdoor room?, a formal estate or a sculpture garden the Yellow Book?s got the lot. The creativity, commitment and sheer generosity of those who open their gardens is something we should be immensely proud of, and remember, it?s all for charity. Enjoy."
