La litterature francophone n'a pas disparu apres l'independance de l'Algerie, mais s'est developpee dans les annees 80, pour litteralement exploser dans les annees 90. Les intellectuels maghrebins continuent de produire la totalite de leurs ecrits litteraires et scientifiques en francais et non pas en arabe, malgre la guerre civile et les menaces integristes. En examinant les etudes faites entre la fin des annees 50 et des annees 80, cet ouvrage remet en question l'opposition binaire et reductrice entre l'arabe et le francais. Il propose une nouvelle approche du Maghreb, desormais fondee sur quatre parametres linguistiques et culturels: l'arabe classique, l'arabe parle, le berbere et le francais. Cet ouvrage tente de donner aux lecteurs francophones une vue d'ensemble de la realite du contexte maghrebin. Il se voudrait aussi etre un modeste plaidoyer pour la diversite en Afrique du Nord.

About the Author :
L'auteur: Alek Baylee Toumi est ne en Kabylie, a vecu en Algerie puis en France avant de s'exiler aux Etats-Unis en 1984. Il est l'auteur de plusieurs pieces de theatre sur Sartre, Beauvoir et Camus: Madah-Sartre, Taxieur: la liberation miracu(l/ri)euse de J.P. Sartre, et Albert Camus: entre la mere et l'injustice ainsi que du recueil de textes Memoires des Annees de chaines, de haines et d'humiliations. Apres Middlebury College, Bates College, et Franklin & Marshall College, il enseigne aujourd'hui les etudes francaises et francophones a l'universite du Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
