L'histoire du roman moderne est celle de la disparition progressive du personnage a l'interieur de la fiction. Au-dela, c'est la mise a jour d'un systeme sous-jacent ou le texte lui-meme renvoie a une realite du personnage dont il serait une interpretation vraisemblable. L'examen idiologique des modes narratifs dans quatre romans modernes, Don Quichotte, La Nouvelle Heloise, Madame Bovary et A la Recherche du temps perdu, revele la portee narrative de ce phenomene.

About the Author :
Frederic Fladenmuller est assistant professeur de langues etrangeres et de litteratures a l'Universite de la Caroline de l'Est, a Greenville. Il a obtenu son Ph.d. en langues romanes de l'Universite de la Caroline du Nord, a Chapel Hill. Specialiste du roman moderne jusqu'au nouveau roman, il a ecrit notamment sur l'oeuvre de Marcel Proust. L'ensemble de ses travaux vise a l'elaboration d'une theorie de narratologie caracterologique dans le roman moderne.

Review :
L'etude sur Madame Bovary prolonge les articles sur Proust et Cervantes, et degage la methode critique de l'auteur; elle en confirme l'efficacite et l'originalite. Le caractere determine le pouvoir narratif du heros ou des heros (heroines) dans le deroulement de l'oeuvre; on pourrait appeler cette theorie, theorie de narratologie caracterologique. (Edouard Morot-Sir) Selon Frederic Fladenmuller on insiste trop sur la disparition du personnage dans le recit moderne. Il serait plus juste de parler de transposition - du personnage privilegie et son histoire au personnage-objet produit par le texte. La fonction du personnage se substantialise et finit par s'integrer au discours narratif, mais elle ne disparait pas. Frederic Fladenmuller se penche sur quatre grands romans, 'Don Quichotte, La Nouvelle Heloise, Madame Bovary', et 'A la Recherche du temps perdu' pour etablir une typologie de la fonction caracterielle dans le recit moderne et pour nous inviter a repenser certaines verites acquises sur le Nouveau Roman. Tout lecteur qui s'interesse au roman et a la problematique de la modernite ne voudra pas se priver de cette contribution subtile et originale a la theorie de la narration. (Roch C.
