About the Book

Music production is a craft that combines art, technology, and business to fashion a new and cohesive whole. The music producer must have knowledge of the business as well as the creativity and ability to instill his own voice to the project. This introduction to the art provides the skills necessary to be a successful music producer. Music Production: A Manual for Producers, Composers, Arrangers, and Students walks the reader through the music production process, giving a comprehensive explanation of what is involved and how to do it. Divided into three parts, the book covers essential information on producing and recording, changes and advances in technology, and invaluable advice on the ins and outs of the music business. Covering the creative as well as technical sides of music production, the book describes methods and variations for classical, vocal, and pop recordings, and offers discussions on film, television, commercials, music videos, and corporate music. Author Michael Zager explains the many tasks music producers face, from musical techniques-exploring compositions, songwriting, arranging and orchestrating, and coaching singers and musicians-to technological skills-understanding and using studio technology, mixing and mastering, editing, and audio engineering. Guidance on advertising, promotion and marketing, and contracts and business agreements is also given. A brief history of popular music, a timeline of technological advances, and an audio CD of exercises round out the information herein. This primer for music production is a useful textbook for students, and an introduction for both amateurs and professionals interested in learning the workings of music producing and recording.

Review :
Michael Zager has done an incredible job compiling a vast amount of necessary information for today's aspiring music producer. He delivers the information with a clear and direct style that will truly enlighten the reader. -- Richard DeRosa Michael Zager's book is perfect for anyone who wants to become a record producer. He breaks the creative process down and thoroughly examines every step required to make a great record, including understanding your artist, songwriting, arranging, producing vocals, mixing, and mastering. But he also does a great job throughout covering the indisputable reality that making records is a business, and to be a successful producer you must learn to balance the art of music with the ever present bottom line. Very educational. I highly recommend it. -- Charles Dye Michael Zager's new offering serves as an insightful look into the interdisciplinary field of music for media applications (film, video, advertising, jingles, etc.). While ambitious and broad in scope, it manages to provide relevant and practical information for the fledgling commercial music composer/producer. Zager has truly succeeded in 'cutting to the chase' when it comes to useful guidelines and plain good advice. I would recommend this book to any music student with interests in pursuing a career in this field. -- Raul Murciano Jr. Guides readers through the music production process, explaining all that's needed to know about producing classical, pop, and even film or music video recordings. California Bookwatch, Vol. 1, No. 9 (November 2006) A comprehensive overview of all aspects of music production. ... useful and thoughtful insights into the production process from a highly experienced practitioner. Popular Music, Vol. 26, No. 3, 2007 A comprehensive guidebook to audio music production and its surrounding business. ... demystifies the recording production industry and bestows top instruction on conduct and technique--an informative guide. Music Teacher, April 2007 May I say the writing is excellent, crystal clear, and informative...I know or used to know much of what you write about, but I find myself renewed and re-interested as well as informed...I think students will be most thankful your book exists. -- Charles Strouse
