About the Book

In 1981, the country watched in awe as the space shuttle Columbia made its victorious return to Earth after a hugely successful first mission. More than two decades later, television screens were again filled with images of Columbia, but for a very different reason. Columbia had broken apart in mid-air, killing all seven astronauts aboard. It was the end of an era. This book goes back to the beginning, when John Young and Robert Crippen became the first astronauts to man the brand-new space shuttle Columbia. Readers follow along as Young and Crippen maneuver the spacecraft into orbit and complete the many tasks required of an astronaut. The last chapter covers the final flight of Columbia, the catastrophic break-up, and the subsequent on-going search for answers in this tragedy.

Review :
This interesting, informative account of space shuttle Columbia's life from the first liftoff, to the 27 additional flights including the tragic final flight should appeal to anyone having an interest in space travel or the space program. Although written on a basic level, the account offers a lot of information, helping to make sense of a highly complicated subject. Cole uses correct terminology usually in the form of actual dialogue of the astronauts or Mission controllers, but makes it a point to explain the meaning through definition or in context. The color and b&w photographs complement the story by reemphasizing key points such as Columbia's first lift off and Astronaut Robert Crippen's first experience with weightlessness aboard the space shuttle. Other "kid-friendly" topics include how the astronauts sleep, what they eat, and what they do all day. In addition, the other space shuttles including Discovery, Atlantis, Challenger (whose tragedy is touched on as well) and later Endeavor are mentioned. The story shares the importance and excitement of space exploration; and perhaps most importantly of all, the fact that space travel is still in its beginning stages. The vastness of what scientists and astronauts have and could discover is phenomenal. Bibliography. Glossary. Web sites. Recommended., Library Media Connection February 2004
