About the Book

From Cuban-American novelist Matias Travieso-Diaz comes a cycle of heroic stories on the pride, passion and power of the ancient Norse deities. What is Thor's secret fear? Loki's lasting grudge? And what was the price that goddess Freyja had to pay for the renowned piece of jewelry known as Brísingamen? Explore the action-packed world of the gods as they battle frost giants, ancient fiends and monsters, as well as the treacherous enemy within their own ranks...

About the Author :
Matias Travieso-Diaz is a former engineer and attorney who, following retirement, redirected his efforts towards fiction writing. He lives with his daughter and two dogs in the Washington, D.C. area. He describes himself as an "Animal Farm goat, Packers and Barça fan, and lover of opera, classical theater, jazz, Italian food and vino." He is the author of numerous short stories, and two novels: The Taíno Women, set in Cuba's early colonial period, and The Travels of Lázaro Serrano, set in Cuba and Jamaica in 1762-63. The Satchel and other Terrors, a collection of some of his published short stories, was released in February 2023 and is available through Amazon and other retailers. Additional collections of his stories are scheduled for publication in 2025.

Review :
This book is a must-read for fans of Norse mythology and short stories. The author provides his own adaptation - in short story form - of six relatively well-known tales from sources such as the Poetic and Prose Edda, and Sorli's tale. The first story combines the story of Idunn's abduction by the giant Thiazi and the humiliation of Loki to mollify Thiazi's daughter, Skadi. The second story recounts the trials underwent by Thor during his encounter with Skrymir, but in the form of a reminiscence between a shockingly vulnerable thunder god and his love interest Sif. The third and fourth stories are retellings of stories involving the goddess Freya and her necklace Brisingamen, with the fourth story culminating in the doubly lethal battle at Ragnarok between the divine rivals, Heimdall and Loki. The fifth and sixth stories are also adaptations of traditions regarding the great battle at Ragnarok, which, the Norse believed, would result in the eradication of the old gods and the rebirth of the world. Specifically, the fifth story is the action-packed tale of Odin's fight against the giant wolf Fenrir, while the sixth relates the dramatic death of the deity Baldr. The author's writes eloquently yet simply. His obvious talent rests in his ability to introduce a human and sometimes comedic touch to these age-old stories. Speaking for myself, I could not stop laughing at the ending the first tale. Rather than have Loki put the family jewels on the line in a game of tug of war with a goat, he has Loki take a somewhat gentler approach that would make Black Philip of The Witch fame blush!
