About the Book

The Language of Song: Intermediate (Low Voice) is part of the successful series by Heidi Pegler and Nicola-Jane Kemp. The ability to sing in foreign languages is a much-needed skill for singers, but few vocal training resources tackle this aspect comprehensively in one book. With this in mind, ABRSM examiners and professional singers Heidi and Nicola-Jane  have written a graded series of songbooks that provide classic song repertoire, carefully selected to develop the vital skills required to sing in a foreign language. An invaluable resource for all singing students and teachers, each song gives both a literal and poetic translation of each text, a detailed pronunciation guide using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) guide and background information on the songs as well as technical and musical teaching points. The downloadable audio includes the text for each song spoken by a native speaker - expert language consultants who specialise in coaching singers - as well as a recording of each song accompanied by international pianist John Lenehan. Not just ideal for those taking graded singing exams, these are invaluable for singers of any age exploring international song repertoire up to university and college level. Learn to sing this wonderful foreign language repertoire confidently and effectively and celebrate the Language of Song! This collection focuses on songs in Italian, German and French, with some Spanish. The Language of Song series was voted 'Best Educational Publication' at the 2007 Music Industries Association Awards. **ABRSM selected pieces (Singing from 2009): Vergebliches Ständchen (Brahms) Mariä Wiegenlied (The Virgin’s Slumber Song/Mary’s Cradle Song) (Reger) En Jerez de la Frontera (The Miller’s Wife) (Rodrigo) Tu lo sai (You know well) (Torelli) Le charme (Chausson) Aurore (Faure) Ständchen: No. 4 from Schwanengesang (Schubert) Amarilli, mia bella (Amaryllis, my lovely) (Caccini) Se tu m’ami (If you love me) (attrib. Parisotti/Pergolesi) Toglietemi la vita ancor: from Il Pompeo (Scarlatti) Vaga luna, che inargenti (Bellini) Clair de lune (Faure) Le secret (Faure) Die Forelle (Schubert) Die Lotosblume (Schumann) El majo discreto: from Tonadillas en un estilo antiguo (Granados) Canción de cuna para dormir a un negrito (Montsalvatge)

Review :
This excellent anthology series is a good source for reference, study, and performance. Journal of Singing (National Association of Teachers of Singing), May 2010 These books offer a very valuable learning experience; they are very carefully thought out, and offer the best introduction to singing in other languages that I have come across. If I mention the fact that nearly all the pieces are to be found in the examination syllabi of the ABRSM and the Trinity Guildhall, do not be tempted to look at them simply as exam material. This very practical consideration means that the books may well be bought with a specific exam piece in mind, but they will then be used and studied by both teachers and students long after.
