About the Book

Portrait of a Man is the soul-searching and heart-warming sequel to The Cornish Knot. Set in Dunedin, Invercargill and Auckland, New Zealand. An Italian artist, a Cornish knot and a Māori koru lead to a shocking exposé. As World War One escalates, can he keep his secrets safe? The gripping multigenerational tale of lies, lost chances and misplaced love. Will the secrets of the past destroy an artist’s legacy? Matteo Borgoni is a desperate man. He must succeed if he is to free his beloved wife, held captive by her father in Melbourne. His picture-framing skills establish him with the artists of Dunedin in 1863, but he has many doubts, and many more obstacles to overcome. In 1913, Tommaso, proprietor of the Invercargill branch of Borgoni Picture Framers, befriends a rakish Italian portrait artist on the run from his past. As the ravages of World War One escalate, fear is constant but compassion brings unexpected consequences. A terrifying pandemic is the last thing they need. Over a century later, a man recognises a portrait in an Auckland gallery and demands it back. Amid another global pandemic, a marriage on the brink of failure, and a life-and-death struggle, the portrait exposes generations of family secrets and deceptions with life-changing results. Portrait of a Man is told over three timelines through the eyes of different generations.

About the Author :
Vicky Adin’s passion is writing inter-generational sagas inspired by early immigrant stories to New Zealand, linked by journals, letters, photographs, and heirlooms. Many decades of research later, Vicky has combined her skills to write heart-warming novels weaving family life and history together in a way that makes the past come alive. She invites you to journey alongside the immigrants as they cross the oceans for a better life, or follow their descendants as they uncover the long lost secrets of bygone days. Delve into The New Zealand Immigrant Collection, suspenseful family saga fiction uncovering the mysteries, the lies and the challenges of the past. You won’t be disappointed. Vicky Adin holds a MA(Hons) in English and Education. She is an avid reader of historical novels, family sagas and contemporary women’s stories and loves to travel. She especially enjoys caravanning around New Zealand with her husband and biggest fan; and spending time with her family. An award-winning author, Vicky’s writing has been compared with that of Catherine Cookson. She is a recipient of a Gold Standard Quality Mark, two Indie B.R.A.G medallions and two Chill with a Book Readers’ Awards for other novels.

Review :
Vicky Adin has cleverly placed Portrait of a Man apart from other historical novels set in New Zealand’s pioneer years; there is nothing at all predictable about the story. With intricately interwoven stories to tease apart, readers are drawn into the fragments of a mosaic-like mystery. A refreshingly different family saga which I enjoyed on many levels. **** 5-star Flaxroots review
