About the Book

Providing an account of the development of democracy in Britain, this book starts from the "unreformed" political system before 1832 to the Parliamentary Reform Acts passed between 1832 and 1918, with the extension of the franchise, the secret ballot and the elimination of corrupt practices. The book also provides an examination of parliamentary reforms whilst exploring the changing role of the monarchy and the reasons for its survival, and the development of local government. It concludes by examining to what extent Britain possessed truly democratic political institutions after 1918.

Table of Contents:
1. Introduction: The development of democracy in Britain 2. The unreformed political system 3. The Great Reform Act 4. Parliamentary reform after 1832 5. Local government 6. The changing role of monarchy 7. The Liberals, the Lords and reform 1906-14 8. Conclusion

Review :
The series is regarded as the most suitable for the new syllabuses as well as the old ones because of the judicious mixture of texts, commentary and exercises - in generally accessible language.
