About the Book

This text approaches the "delivery" of the cross curricular skills, themes and dimensions from a perspective which emphasizes the culture of primary schools and the social world of children. It argues that the teaching of skills, attitudes, concepts and knowledge to young children should not be seen as separate or alternative objectives, but rather as complementary and essential elements of the educational process. Each of the approaches outlined in the book is grounded in an essential respect and empathy for children and childhood as a distinct stage in life and not merely a preparation for the world of adulthood. The authors argue that responsibilities and decision-making are everyday experiences for children and that they need to be able to develop attitudes and skills which enable them to participate fully in their own social world.

Table of Contents:
Cross curricular skills, themes and dimensions - an introduction; little citizens - helping children to help each other; effective schooling for all - the "special educational needs" dimension; racial equality education - identity, curriculum and pedagogy; "girls don't do bricks" - gender and sexuality in the primary classroom; children in an economic world - young children learning in a consumerist post-industrial state; catching them young - careers education in the primary years; understanding environmental education for the primary classroom; health education in the primary school - back to basics?; the place of PSE in the primary school.

Review :
"...provides a challenging agenda for primary schools. Theeditors and contributors have provided both a theoretical and very practical guide for what has been a wasteland of misunderstood, fragmented, barely implemented issues marginalised beyond the basic curriculum...This is a timely book and it should be welcomed into every primary school." - Education Now "...useful as a starting point for initial teacher education students and for continuing professional development because it contains a rich mixture of practical examples and debate on values and principles." - Early Years Journal
